Here’s something that will blow your mind.

Quarantine of 14 days — because SARS-CoV-19 as up of 14 days of incubation time — is useless if you don’t test at the end of it.

Asymptomatic carriers will not exhibit symptoms, spreading the disease after quarantine.

The Netherlands has reported (until today) some 2500 SARS-CoV-19-related deaths.

However, by looking at 2019 and 2018 patterns, they have observed, only in week 13 and 14, approximately 3500 extra deaths than “normal” (see https://www.cbs.nl/nl-nl/nieuws/2020/15/sterfte-neemt-verder-toe in Dutch)

In short: they are undercounting corona-deaths by roughly 50% (rough number as sometimes the seasonal flu hits harder).

How is it possible? Lots of old people dying are not being tested for Covid-19.

Unsolicited feedback is always humbling. Even more so when it’s positive.

Thanks Jeroen MULDER

It has been almost three years since I’ve organized the first Code Breakfast with the PyData Community (link https://www.meetup.com/PyData-NL/events/244569104/).

What a resilient initiative! Now with covid19 keeping us home, the breakfasts have moved to online as well.

The last iteration is about time series

There’s one gotcha though: you need to provide the croissants yourself!

Enjoy!

Working from home, staying at home, home-schooling.

How to combine it all?

Today the kids’ school asked us to go into the woods and — maintaining a religious distance of at least 15m between people of different households — catalogue everything they saw.

So here’s a picture of me while in the middle of a conference call with APMG International. We’ll announce something big in the next few weeks, we couldn’t postpone.

In the background you can see my kids writing about a tree infected with oak processionary caterpillar.

In the background a snapshot of the typical Dutch weather: 50 shades of grey!

It’s has been a good while since we’ve been giving online courses.

The feedback has always been great.

It was easy — last week — to switch all our courses to online-only. And… we introduced two more, online first courses.

You’re gonna love them!

Spark is not an easy beast. Even more challenging at Booking.com scale.

But Oleksandra Bovkun and Roman Ivanov have tamed it: Spark Optimization at Booking.com scale!

To the guy who spit on my face while I was cycling minding my own business: I’ve let my friends from Palermo know.

They’ll get in touch!
