Andrew Palmer hits it out of the ballpark again in the latest issue of The Economist

“Here are some handy rules of thumb. Anyone who calls themselves a thought leader is to be avoided. A man who does not wear socks cannot be trusted. And a company that holds an employee-appreciation day does not appreciate its employees.”

Everybody needs a Thijs in their life.

That’s your chance to get a slice of him if you’re going to Re:Invent.

How do you create data-driven tools, end to end, in a bank in just six months—from idea to production?

How do you change the engine of your organization while you’re running it?

How do you ensure the technical teams are aligned with the business team and are zinging along to create kick-ass data products?

Come hear the answer from Rabobank, Pon Automotive, and Booking.com at the next Analytics Translator in Practice meetup.

Details below (or should I put them in the comments? Damned recommendation algorithm, I never remember how to fool you!)

We’re thrilled to launch GoDataFest again this year.

We have so many speakers and incredible workshops, but let’s see some highlights

You’ll notice that we are asking for a small entrance fee this year.

We don’t do it for the money—but to avoid wasting food, which is always painful at this time when many around us can’t make ends meet.

If, however, the few euros we’re asking are too much for you—just drop me a message, and I’ll give you a code to get in free of charge!

Spread the word and don’t forget to hit the like button!

Don’t be like Haggis.

A brilliant explanation of technical debt to non-techies.

Unsurprisingly, it has been found LLMs cannot generalize.

Humans are safe—still.

I’m really bullish on the future of DuckDB.

Friends who managed data analytics solution offerings told me that most of their customers (95%+) didn’t have more than 100GB in their analytics engine.

However, that little data they had was analyzed over and over. Getting results quickly was key!

So, why am I bullish on DuckDB?

The reason is simple. DuckDB is a serverless, in-process OLAP database management system that’s really fast.

With many machines offering more than 100GB of RAM, the majority of analytics use cases can be tackled on a single machine.

Think about that!

And the market seems to agree with me. MotherDuck, a company offering serverless data analytics with DuckDB, has just raised USD 100M in their Series B. While many startups struggle to get cash, investors opened up their purses big time for a company that is centered around DuckDB.

And, last but not least: Xebia’s very own Diederik Greveling and Cor Zuurmond are already out there sharing knowledge on how to leverage DuckDB and Motherduck to simplify the overall data landscape & decrease the cost of data processing while making data even more accessible (impression of their talk at the Big Data Expo in the video!)

Bonus: if you are starting or starting out with DuckDB, check out https://harlequin.sh/ the DuckDB IDE for your terminal!

These are the people in the know.

And you can be one too, if building ML systems is your thing!
